About project

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

United Nations Secretary General Mr.Kofi Annan  called for a new funding mechanism and a "war chest" to fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria at the 56th General Assembly Meeting in June 2001. In response to the call the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) was established in January 2002 in Geneva.  Since then millions of people benefited from the Global Fund supported projects, and the scope and coverage of prevention programs has expanded year on year. Health programs supported by GFATM have saved 38 million lives since 2002.

GTATM provides financial support to 140 countries, which accounts for 21, 73 and 56 percent of total international financing for AIDS/HIV, TB and malaria programs, respectively.

As of 2019, The Global Fund's support has provided anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment for 20.1 million people, TB treatment service to 5.7 million patients and mosquito nets to 320 million people. Also 718 thousands HIV-positive mothers received medicine to keep them alive and prevent transmitting HIV to their babies and 125 thousands people were on treatment for multidrug-resident TB.

GFATM adheres to the following principles for financing:

  • Additionally provide financial support to the governments funding for HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria. in low and middle income countries.
  • Establish a Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) to develop project proposals, to ensure an equal participation of all stakeholders, to coordinate their activities and to monitor project implementation.
  • Provide performance-based funding
